3.1.5 Summer Appointments

A. Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to state The University of Texas at Tyler's guidelines regarding summer school employment of teaching faculty.

D. Policy

Faculty appointments for summer terms are made on the basis of institutional and program needs and are made at the discretion of the chairperson with the approval of deans.

E. Responsibilities

The Office of the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs is responsible for the administration of this policy. Chairpersons and deans are responsible for the implementation of the policy.

F. Procedures

Faculty who desire to teach during summer semesters should communicate that interest to their departmental chairperson. The preparation of a summer schedule of classes and the assignment of faculty are the responsibilities of chairperson.

Faculty may teach up to nine semester- hours in summers at a compensation rate of 1/12th of their nine-month salary for each three semester-hours of instruction regardless of the level of the courses taught. Exceptions to the maximum teaching load for summer must be approved by the Provost. Faculty may supplement summer salaries for the teaching limit of nine semester hours with funding from grants up to a total of 1/3 of the salary for the preceding academic year.  

Thesis/dissertation supervision and independent studies are not eligible for compensation during summers.  Faculty may supplement summer salaries for the teaching limit of nine semester hours with funding from grants up to a total of 1/3 of the salary for the preceding academic year.  

Faculty who accept summer appointments will be expected to perform other reasonable duties requested by chairpersons. 

Any summer course for which faculty are compensated during summer semester must adhere to the criteria for minimum enrollments for undergraduate and graduate courses.

G. Review

The Divisional Head for this policy is the Provost.
