4.25.0 Mother-Friendly Workplace

A. Purpose

U.T. Tyler is supportive of its working mothers who want to continue to breast feed after returning to work. The University’s mother-friendly policy meets the standards required to become a “mother-friendly” employer under the Texas Health and Safety Code. The purpose of this policy is to encourage all pregnant and postpartum employees of U.T. Tyler to
consider breastfeeding their children as a means of promoting the health of both the child and the mother.

    U.T. Tyler will provide facilities which meet the minimum standard established by H.B. 359, Breastfeeding in Public Places:

    1. Work schedule flexibility including scheduling breaks and work patterns to provide time for expression of milk;

    2. The provision of an accessible location allowing privacy;

    3. Access to clean, safe water source and a sink for washing hands and rinsing out any needed breast-pumping equipment; and

    4. Access to hygienic storage for the mother’s breast milk.


    1.  Supervisors will create an atmosphere that enables women to confidentially approach them and their co-workers in regard to plans to provide breast milk for their children.

    2. Be open and flexible to break and lunch schedules during the period when the mother is expressing milk.

    3. Help the employee find an appropriate area to pump and store milk. If the supervisor cannot arrange for an appropriate area, the appropriate dean or vice president should be contacted.


    1. Communicate with supervisor regarding the needs as far in advance as possible

    2. Make up any additional time used outside of breaks and lunch.

F. Review

This policy shall be reviewed by the Director of Human Resources every five years or as legislation changes.
